My former students, especially Batch ‘73, at Mt. Carmel High School on Polillo Island in Quezon Provine, impress me very much. Although I taught them for only three years, they have always been close to me and kept in touch with me after I left for the United States in 1972. With Facebook providing faster communications and connections, a growing number of my former students and those before and after them, have collaborated with Metro Infanta Foundation on a few projects, including rebuilding the bell tower and the entrance and interior of the town’s St. Joseph Parish, the purchase of an electricity generator and refurbishing classrooms.
During my February visit I had a meeting with many of them to see how we can help increase the school enrollment. It turned out there’s also a very serious problem about the maintenance of the facilities. The current situation, however, has forced them to concentrate on increasing the enrollment.
With a goal of raising funds for full scholarships for 70 incoming freshmen, various alumni batches have already raised 225,647.91. An additional $750 (about 36,750) from Metro Infanta Foundation brings their goal within reach—just a little over 157,000 pesos.
Polillo Carmelians: your old school needs you! I know these are tough times, but any contribution, big or small will make a difference. If you have the capacity to make a contribution, please do so NOW!
Those in the United States might want to take advantage of tax-deductions by making their contribution through Metro Infanta Foundation.
