and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them [the apostles] and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it. There is no reason to doubt that from the text, and, based upon the inspiration of this author and his work, there is every reason to believe him to be completely accurate here and elsewhere. 1 2 And a man r lame from birth was being carried, s whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate t to ask alms of those entering the temple. It happens again in the book of Acts. You don't know what it means to hear you say that." That is always where he desires to start. And how puzzled the Council members would have been to hear them affirm that the cell doors were securely locked and that no one had passed them in the night. It is also evident that later on in the New Testament, the results of preaching the gospel are not as dramatic (cf. No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. What's the matter?" The evil forces will only raise up other men and women to do it all over again. The closing words of this fifth chapter present a series of events which center around the confrontation of the apostles with the Sanhedrin, the Jewish rulers. That is what they asked God to do, and that is what he did. Thus, they sent a party to arrest the apostles and to put them in jail. 18 They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.” (Acts 5:17-18). That is where the opposition and hostility is coming from. John Piper Jan 19, 2020 6.8K Shares God is most glorified in us Their choice of obeying Jesus above the Sanhedrin was based on the facts. For before these days Theudas arose, giving himself out to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him; but he was slain and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. And if they refused .… Well, then they would simply have to get tough with them. These things, which Jesus foretold, are seen to be taking place before our eyes in our text. He is also “the law.” The Duke boys are the apostles—those “country folk” who don’t have the education and the sophistication to be great (or so we suppose), and yet they always end up out-foxing Boss Hogg. That is what we must understand if we are going to face life and understand it properly. It was like the “defendant” had just given the judge a hotfoot, or set his jurors’ robe on fire, watching him run from the courtroom in flames. The man left vine-growers in charge. Greater works than physical healing? Here is obvious evidence of the power of God at work. In suffering for the sake of the gospel, the apostles found the privilege of a deeper identification with the One whose suffering had brought salvation to them. Q. They were to return to the temple, not to some place less visible and less dangerous. And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women, so that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and pallets, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. It is, I think, an amazing thing that Gamaliel would even entertain the possibility that the apostles were a divinely-ordained and divinely-empowered group. 75 If I were casting this scene, I would have chosen Don Knotts to be the soldier to announce the disappearance of the prisoners during the night. They took their seats. It was He alone who could forgive Israel and grant repentance and the forgiveness of their sins. If this were the first experience of the apostles inside a prison and if they walked past the guards, somehow miraculously asleep or unaware of their departure, the noise of doors opening and closing must have been distressing. The God of our fathers raised Jesus whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. It is not something that is unusual or reserved for just a few; it is for all. Can’t you see Peter whispering to John, “I wish I had brought my can of WD-40?”. 38 “And so in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or action should be of men, it will be overthrown; 39 but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found fighting against God.” 40 And they took his advice, and after calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them to speak no more in the name of Jesus, and then released them. That is because it was a privilege to the apostles, not a “cross to bear.” How much we make of pain today, and how little we make of the privilege of suffering for the sake of His name. The chief priests were all of the Sadducee party. Once again, the apostles were commanded to stop preaching in the name of Jesus. With the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the preaching of the gospel began with thousands coming to faith in Jesus as the Messiah (Acts 2). Now get the picture. ", 33When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death. (Acts 5:21b-26 RSV). This is what God is forever doing. 17 But the high priest rose up, along with all his associates (that is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy; 18 and they laid hands on the apostles, and put them in a public jail. The resurrection power of a living God cannot be held by prison walls, gates, bars, and chains. He also taught them that their leadership would be taken from them and that another nation would become God’s kingdom. Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were much perplexed about them, wondering what this would come to. I love that. They would have no problem here, they were certain, for they had already arrested Peter and John and detained them overnight, without incident. Jesus said that, didn't he? But he allows us to see the invisible by means of visible events. (Acts 5:40-42 RSV). I do not think it did. He gripped my hand, and he said, "Bless you. They kept the faith by preaching the gospel without fear. It was the beginning of a course of action that would continue throughout the history of the church. Their ministry was testimony to this, and to their witness was added the witness of the Holy Spirit, through whom the signs and wonders were accomplished. Acts 5:12-42 New King James Version (NKJV) Continuing Power in the Church. On the other hand, the apostle Peter, without even trying to do so, rebuked Ananias, and God disciplined him, causing him to die at Peter’s feet. Into that courtroom, stunned by these events, came those who reported that the apostles were back in the temple, doing exactly what they had been arrested for doing the previous day. But if you check on them two weeks or a month later you will find them right back in the same afflictions they had before. That is exactly what happened here in this passage in Acts 5. ", So they took his advice, ... (Acts 5:34-40a RSV). 36 “For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody; and a group of about four hundred men joined up with him. 17 But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of q the Sadducees), and filled with r jealousy 18 they arrested the apostles and s put them in the public prison. But the apostles did not think of their suffering so much as a “price to pay,” but as a privilege. No “slap on the wrist” would have been sufficient for the Sadducees here. There was the possibility that God was behind this movement. These leaders, the highest Jewish authorities in the land, were totally out of control. True, Boss Hogg may put the Duke boys in jail for a few days, now and then, but his trumped-up charges always fail to hold water and to accomplish his sinister purposes. This is a superstitious response of people who were caught up with the tremendous excitement of physical healing and they thus began to obscure the point of the spiritual lesson involved. It was one that Gamaliel, as a Pharisee, was more willing to grant than were his Sadducean colleagues. Why should it be any different with His apostles? They have all continued to gather in the temple precincts, at the portico of Solomon. 30 “The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you had put to death by hanging Him on a cross. Our physical circumstances are quite irrelevant. The second factor evident in this account follows immediately, But the high priest rose up and all who were with him, that is, the party of the Sadducees, and filled with jealousy they arrested the apostles and put them in the common prison. We do not know the source of the report which Luke gives us here, but we do know the substance of it. Read the Passage: Acts 5:12-42 Ministry and Arrest (5:12–21) Acts 5:12–16 records that God was pleased to facilitate many signs and wonders among the people during the early days of the church. But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than men. When the Apostle Paul wrote his last letter to his son in the faith, Timothy, he said, "In the last days there shall come perilous times..." (2 Timothy 3:1b KJV). He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. They were intended to confirm the ministry of these mighty apostles who laid the foundations of the church in the giving of the Scriptures. These priests saw that their power and position were under siege. As the camera angle begins to widen, we see another crowd gathered. 25Then someone came and said, "Look! In reality, there are two escapes and not one. When the high priest and his associates arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail for the apostles. Seeing the healed man before them, they could not deny that a great miracle had taken place. Do you suppose that someone asked them, “How did you guys get away, anyhow?” “Oh, God sent an angel,” the response might have been. It is manifest all around us, everywhere, on every side today. To whom did the Lord say that? Every day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ. 32 And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.”70. If this movement was like the others, it would pass away—it would collapse under its own weight. 1. And every day in the temple and at home they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ. The more I read this account of the “great escapes” of the apostles, the more the analogy to this television series seems to fit. The whole issue of the authority of the apostles and their conflict with the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem is evident in the Book of Acts thus far. Peter said in the passage read to you this morning, "Do not be surprised at the fiery trial which comes upon you to prove you, as though something strange were happening to you..." (1 Peter 4:12). This led to a rather comprehensive response from Jesus. (Acts 5:17-21a RSV). We're being opposed! There was another option, however. To put them to death now would be unwise. Message transcript and recording © 1970 by Ray Stedman Ministries, owner of sole copyright by assignment from the author. Nor does it say that the shadow of Peter falling on them did heal them. Have you not seen the signs of an apostle that I have done among you?" And they were to proclaim the “whole message of this Life” (5:20). Gamaliel is a man who is, on the one hand, a hero here, and yet he is a tragic hero, for he has not repented of his sin and trusted in the Savior. Acts 5:1-4 Bible Study Acts 5:5-11 Ananias and Sapphira Acts 5:12-16 Solomon's Porch Acts 5:17-23 Sadducees Acts 5:24-28 Chief Priests Acts 5:29-33 Obey God rather than Men Acts 5:34-42 Gamaliel Acts 5 Bible Study Questions (Handout) 42 And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ. The best analogy I can think of is the television series, “The Dukes of Hazard.” The key players in this drama are the apostles—all twelve of them—and the people of Jerusalem and the surrounding areas, and the Sanhedrin, the highest Jewish governing body (both legislative and judicial) in Israel. During that whole time there would come periods of crisis, times of danger, times of peril, when men would be "lovers of self, lovers of money... and lovers of pleasure, rather than lovers of God..." (2 Timothy 3:2 RSV). But the power of God to heal spiritually is present and available to us. I pray that you, like so many in the days of the apostles, will acknowledge your sin and turn to the Savior for life eternal. You sit there so unimpressed by this! Yet these are not the real cause, nor the reason behind this tension. I am not sure that his premise is correct, however. Not only may men repent and be saved, but others will likely be angered, react, and resist. 19 But during the night t an angel of the Lord u opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, 20 "Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all v the words of w this x Life." The thrust of our text can best be seen from the vantage point of its context. 12 And at the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were taking place among the people; and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s portico.68 13 But none of the rest dared to associate with them; however, the people held them in high esteem. These four factors are clear in this account. Revival In Samaria. The scene must have been a bit like that in the “Sound of Music,” when the Von Trapp family disappeared from the music hall, and the Nazi soldiers came running in to announce that they were gone.75 How “red faced” the guards must have been. That is why it is so useless to attempt physical resistance against these kind of forces. Why don't we have signs and wonders and mighty events like these taking place?" 73 This scene must have been humorous as well. Though this account does not mention it directly, I am very confident that the church was praying for the twelve apostles. They did take his advice, not to act as they wished, but they may not have agreed with his reasons. Persecution is often the result of the proclamation of the gospel. There is power in God to set men free when they are put in prison. But that is the suffering to which he is called. This crowd is composed of those who are not believers, who are reticent to join the Christians in their worship, prayers, or teaching, but who do want to be healed of their infirmities. And yet, as bad as their beating was, very little emphasis is put on it. And they then praised Him from the words of Psalm 2, which spoke of the futility of the efforts of world powers to resist God and His purposes. There is also the squeaking of rusty hinges. After they had been put out of the room temporarily, Gamaliel pled with his fellow Council members to calm down, to get their wits about them, and to come to a more reasoned decision. We shall pick up our study in Acts, the fifth chapter, beginning with Verse 12. For truly in this city there were gathered together against Thy holy servant Jesus, whom Thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever Thy hand and Thy purpose predestined to occur” (Acts 4:24-28). Acts 8:5-24. That would soften them up. 04/02/2006. If these jurors were, at the outset of this trial, disarmed by the supernatural release of the apostles from prison, they were now completely rattled by the role reversal taking place before their own eyes. They have thoughts arising in their hearts which they think originate with themselves, but they are being put into their minds by invisible forces which are at work to oppose the will and purpose of God. Seeing in the wording of Psalm 2 a biblical and poetic expression of the futility of man’s efforts to thwart the plans and purposes of God, they referred to this psalm in their prayer of praise. Surely the apostles could not have predicted how God would deliver them. It may be that they were not convinced at all by this man, who was their opponent, philosophically speaking. Some say that Luke has his facts confused, based upon statements by Josephus or others. But when the officers came, they did not find them in the prison, and they returned and reported, "We found the prison securely locked and the sentries standing at the doors, but when we opened it we found no one inside." Bob was born and raised in a Christian home i... More, Q. Those last days began when our Lord first appeared upon the earth. We will hear their accusations and threats and the response of the apostles. And, amazingly, the efforts of all who were so diligent were rewarded. 71 The apostles (at least Peter and John) were getting used to “leaving the room” (cf. And even more of concern, to what would this lead? Acts 5:12-42: The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. [Acts 5:12-42] August 30. "And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit." They had done exactly as they had said previously (4:19-20). An “angel of the Lord” had let them go in the night, yet without the guards having any knowledge of it. When Jesus was about to ascend to His Father, after His resurrection, He gave the apostles the “Great Commission” which was first a statement concerning His authority, and theirs, and then a commission to preach the gospel to all nations in this authority. 34 But a certain Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, respected by all the people, stood up in the Council and gave orders to put the men outside for a short time.71 35 And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you propose to do with these men. Remember, in Chapter 4, Peter and John had been brought before the Sanhedrin and when they came back to the others they prayed together and this was their prayer: "And now, Lord, look upon their threats, and grant to thy servants to speak thy word with all boldness, while thou stretchest out thy hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of thy holy servant Jesus." On their return to the fellowship of believers, Peter and John shared what had been said and done. Christians began to pray. Browse Sermons on Acts 5:12-42. God wants to heal the whole of man, the hurt in man's spirit most of all. That is another statement of fact. Key Verse 5:20 “’Go, stand in the temple courts,’ he said, ‘and tell the people the full message of this new life.’” A couple weeks ago, we spoke about the prayer in Acts chapter 4 namely verses 29-30 where the Apostles and believers met together and prayed. And they were all with one accord in Solomon’s Porch. The authority of the Jewish leaders is rapidly eroding, while the authority of the apostles is increasing. There are evil forces at work. Let us view it this way as well. The Sanhedrin attempts to find the apostles guilty of some offense, so that they can punish them, and yet it is they themselves who are indicted by the apostles. The apostles had not spoken in their own defense, but there was one present who would—Gamaliel. They cared little for the law or for “due process”; they only wanted to see these men dead. Part 4 (Acts 5:22-42): The high priest and the guards will look for the disciples because the prison is empty. The Sadducees were hopping mad. The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed. Man is in the grip of forces beyond his knowledge and ken, evil forces which are implacably opposed to the will, purpose and love of God. God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 33 But when they heard this, they were cut to the quick and were intending to slay them. This sounds like the days of Jesus all over again, does it not? Acts 4:15). When the captain with the officers went and brought them, but without violence, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people. 41The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. The first thing we must say is that it is not our authority that matters; it is Christ’s authority that counts. Acts 5:12-42 English Standard Version (ESV) Many Signs and Wonders Done. If Acts chapter 5 teaches us anything, it is that the leaders of Israel are no longer in charge. ", When they heard this they were enraged and wanted to kill them. Acts 6:1-6. And they went forth [Who went forth? When Peter and John were on their way to the temple to pray, they encountered a man who was born lame, and who had suffered from this ailment for over forty years. Should an Unbeliever Partake of Communion? The Council took the advice of Gamaliel. There will be some degree of coolness, even among those who are, in many other ways, friendly toward us. 03/05/2006. 3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms. We make a great mistake if we read that as though Paul was talking only about the future. What greater works? But, if you investigate, you will find that it is not the same thing at all. Certain of the early manuscripts do not possess it and it is given as a footnote in the RSV. This love was more than a warm feeling. From the relatively recent past, Gamaliel drew upon the demise of two movements that momentarily found a following from among the Jews.77 In each case, the men died. That is why theological liberals shake their heads at humanity and say, "What's wrong?" This was no “cool and calm” decision. They must obey God above men. The report that was brought to me the next day was that the campus was like a tomb on Thursday night (perhaps in many more ways than one). So they took his advice, and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. Are we keeping the faith in this way? Healing him in the name of Jesus brought together a large crowd (at Solomon’s portico), where Peter preached the gospel. The Ethiopian Eunuch. Now here are the apostles confronted with the same group that had just murdered their Lord, threatened by the same hostility that had accomplished the death of Jesus. As Joe Blinko used to put it, "The devil is no pimple-squeezer; he goes for the jugular vein." I believe this chapter is a vivid illustration of that which Jesus had warned the Jewish leaders in Matthew chapter 21. The angel will let the disciples out of prison and tell them to start preaching again. Physical miracles, although they attract attention, also confuse people so that ultimately they miss the point of what God is saying. Christians seem to have become secularized in their thinking, supposing that one must have position, or human power, or clout, in order to have authority. And the high priest questioned them, 28 saying, “We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.” 29 But Peter and the apostles answered and said, “We must obey God rather than men. His big bugging eyes and frazzled look would have been perfect. And the high priest questioned them, saying, "We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and you intend to bring this man's blood upon us." Scripture: Acts 5:40–41. 68 Solomon’s portico is the same place mentioned in 3:11, where the people gathered in response to the healing of the lame man, where Peter preached, and where he and John were arrested. It is no problem to God to get his people out of prison. Opposition is here, terrible, deadly opposition, designed to strike to the heart, to the jugular vein. The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people." So let them back off, cool down, and see what would come of it all. 13 None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem. But God knew. 32We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him. These committees against us, and the powers that be, etc., they won't let us do what we want. You must look behind the visible to the invisible. And many who will spend eternity in Hell, apart from the Savior, will have heard the gospel many, many times. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. It is always a mistake to put emphasis upon a physical miracle. The Holy Spirit was given, not to the priests or to the members of the Sanhedrin, but to those who obeyed God (5:32). The second scene is in the Council, the meeting of the Sanhedrin. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad, ... for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you..." (Matthew 5:11-12 KJV). 79 Notice how little emphasis is placed on this flogging. Finally someone stood up and said, "What's the matter with us? If only men were behind this new movement, it would bring on its own demise. 36Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. Why, spiritual healings. Then Mark says, So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. The groups the founders brought together lacked the cohesiveness to continue. THE KINGS OF THE EARTH TOOK THEIR STAND, AND THE RULERS WERE GATHERED TOGETHER AGAINST THE LORD, AND AGAINST HIS CHRIST.’. Stand up and be counted. Now that is the restraint of God. From all appearances (especially when viewed in the light of the stoning of Stephen in chapter 7), they would have carried out their intentions, except for the intervention of a rather strange ally, a highly respected teacher of the Pharisees, named Gamaliel. It shows clearly the fallen character of man. This occurred at the word of Peter, as… 02/26/2006. The doctors had given her just a few months to live, and through prayer the tumor disappeared. Many are those who, like Gamaliel, may be willing to grant that God may be speaking through men, but who are not ready to accept and act on the message. They were, as Luke tells us, “cut to the quick,” the same expression used only one other time, in chapter 7, to describe the reaction of those who heard the indictment of Stephen (Acts 7:54). The Bible is filled with examples of divine deliverance. And God knew how to use that man, and when to have him speak. They were released, not so much for their own safety (for they were yet to stand before the Sanhedrin the next morning), but in order to continue to proclaim the gospel.74 They were not to “tone down” their preaching as a result of their arrest and imprisonment. They have come to a greater appreciation of the holiness of God due to the deaths of two saints, but they do not fear gathering together in the name of Jesus. Thus, if the apostles had the Holy Spirit, then they were obeying God and the Sanhedrin (who lacked power) was acting in disobedience to God. (From Pulpit Commentary, Acts 5:42). He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. The Apostles Arrested. He said to these Corinthians, "You are questioning my apostleship. Sermon by Tony Hobbs – 26th February 2012. The apostles may not have the position or standing of the Sanhedrin, but they have the power and the authority. The fact is we do not know that the two men Gamaliel referred to are men whose movements are a matter of historical record, or, if they are, that the record is accurate. 14 And all the more believers in the Lord, multitudes of men and women, were constantly added to their number; 15 to such an extent that they even carried the sick out into the streets, and laid them on cots and pallets, so that when Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on any one of them. The power here manifest physically is a symbol and a guarantee of the spiritual power available to the church at all times. Acts 8:25-40. It was not the apostles who were on trial, but the court itself. People will think we react in funny ways. Most of us were wondering what would happen next, especially when it was published in the papers that the Academic Senate was to meet at Stanford and consider the demands made by radical students for the complete ousting of ROTC from the campus, plus several other impossible demands. Acts 5:12 Commentaries: At the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were taking place among the people; and they were all with one accord in Solomon's portico. He appealed to history instead. i. When the leaders challenged Peter and John as to their authority (much as they had challenged Jesus), these two apostles made it clear that this good deed they had done was accomplished through the power of the risen Christ, the Christ they had rejected and crucified, but whom God had raised from the dead.
