On the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations this year allow me to recall what I observed before that at its inception in 1945, the 1945 UN Charter pompously declared that the United Nations has been established to prevent succeeding generations from the scourge of war which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind and established respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion based on the principle of the sovereign equality of all its members.
However, the very same UN Charter provides also in paragraph 3, Article 27 veto power to any of the five permanent members on the decisions/resolutions of the UNGA. Thus, it is the Big Powers which still actually govern, despite the superiority in number (now has 193 members) of member countries in the UNGA or United Nations General Assembly. In effect it is still a “Disunited Nations.”
When it has outlived its usefulness for any purpose, I won’t be surprise, if like the biblical “Walls of Jericho,” it would crumble to its ruins!
