Typhoon "Milenyo"

by Rudy Arizala

Typhoon "Milenyo" has devastated and thrown into darkness not only Metro Manila but also the provinces of Rizal, Laguna, Quezon and other parts of the country.

I have no news yet whether our town of Infanta, Quezon was also adversely affected by said typhoon.

In Metro Manila only about 40% of electric supply so far has been restored since the typhoon viisted our country last Thursday due to fallen electric towers and trees.

Speaking of fallen trees and how to rehabilitate our environment, hereunder is an excerpt from what Mr. Alejandro R. Roces of The Philippines Star newspaper, 30 September 2006, wrote in his column entitled: Milenyo Paralyzes Manila:

"What we must do now is to replace the trees that were blown down by Milenyo. We should have a program for this and it should involve every household in every barangay. We would also like to see the day when the place where the squatters were removed along the railroad tracks are converted into kilometers long forest. That would certainly enhance that part of Makati. Imagine a forest blooming with flame trees. It would make Makati not only the financial center of Metro Manila, but the most beautiful city in the whole metropolis. The kilometers long forest would make the high-rise buildings blend with nature. Samuel Taylor Coleridge defines nature as "The term in which we comprehend all things that are representable in the form of time and space, and subject to the relations of cause and effect." To which William Cowper "A name for an effect whose is cause is God." As for beauty, we go along with what Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "That which is simple; which has no superfluous parts; which exactly answers its end; which stands related to all things; which is the mean of many extremes."

Mr. Alejandro R. Roces dreaming "The Impossible Dream"?

Methinks not, if everybody will cooperate and not go against nature but really care and respect our environment. And of course, never lose faith in the Lord.

Calamites such as typhoons and flashfloods remind us not only nature“s way of cleansing itself, faith in the Lord but also the value of "simple living" in accord with the laws of nature as pointed out by Ralph Waldo Emerson. For according to William Cowper the cause and effect of nature come from God.
